The number of releases from prison declined 19% from 2020 to 2021 but still exceeded admissions by 22,700. The combined state and federal imprisonment rate at yearend 2021 was 350 sentenced prisoners per 100,000 U.S. residents.

Data shown include counts from 2012 through 2022 and a year-to-year comparison of 2021 and 2022 by selected characteristics.
