Persons on probation made up 54% of the total correctional population in 2021, down from almost 57% in 2011 (table 3). There were almost 400,000 fewer persons held in state and federal prisons in 2021 than in 2011, and nearly 100,000 fewer in the custody of local jails.

About 76% of local jail inmates were held for a felony offense at midyear 2021, up from 68% to 70% from 2016 to 2019 (table 6). The number of persons in jail for a parole violation increased 33% from midyear 2020 to midyear 2021 (table 7).
