Comparing the first half of 2021 to the second half, court dispositions to prison increased 33.7%, the prison commitment rate increased 3.6% (from 15.8% to 19.4%), and prison intake increased 35.9%. As the COVID-19 pandemic recovery continues, monthly prison intake shows a clear trend upward.
During 2022 prison intake recovery continued for a second consecutive year (up 26.7% from 2021 and 46.1% from 2020), as courts continued processing a backlog of cases caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Jail System. Michigan has 82 jails in 83 counties. The jail population in 2021 was 11,748. The Prison System. As of December 31, 2021, the number of prisoners under the jurisdiction of the State of Michigan correctional authorities was 32,186 located in 34 correctional facilities and held in custody of private prisons or local jails.

29 lut 2024 · According to the figures recently published in the MDOC’s 2022 Statistical Report, there were 32,374 people incarcerated in Michigan prisons at the end of 2022, up 188 people or 0.6 percent from the year before. Meanwhile, the average minimum prison sentence in our state continues its upward climb.
