PLANT CARE INFORMATION. Native Grasses. Many species of native Arizona perennial grasses need little or no irrigation once established in Tucson. All are warm-season growers; the tops are often dead and brown from late fall until the summer rains. Most will green up as early as April if watered.
Brochure on Arizona Native Grasses: The Arizona Native Plant Society published this booklet to promote the understanding and use of grasses native to, or naturalized in the Southwest. Native grasses have an important role in the restoration and reclamation of our native plant communities as well as in urban and rural landscapes.
Perennial desert grasses range in size from low turf grasses like curly mesquite grass (Hilaria belangeri) and false grama (Cathestecum brevifolium) to the nearly 3-foot (0.9 m) tall Arizona cottontop (Digitaria californica) and tanglehead (Heteropogon contortus).

This user-friendly field guide can help people of all skill levels identify 50 native and exotic perennial grasses, plus several annual species. This guide grew out of citizen science involvement tracking grassland health at the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area in southeastern Arizona.
