Portugal’s empire began on a very small scale, with the establishment of colonies on a series of archipelagos (island groups). The Portuguese discovered and colonized four archipelagoes in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries: the Madeiras, Azores, Cape Verdes, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
