Yes, they are still a thing. It can be hard to notice them since seasonal (yungoos) or event (psyduck) or comminity day (a-geodude) spawns are all part of the pool. If in doubt about what is in a nest, then if you visit during spotlight hour you nearly always see just the featured and the nest.
