Creating your own successful build is difficult and requires a lot of iteration.
There is a lot going on and for a first character I really recommend using a build guide. Go to youtube and just type in "path of exile legion starter builds". Classes really don't mean much, and gameplay more revolves around what skill you want to be using as your main skill.
