Specific Gravity. For solids and liquids, specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a material to the density of water at 4°C which is taken as 1.0 (since one cc of water weighs one gram). For example, a solid or liquid with a density of 1.5g/cc has a specific gravity of 1.5/1 or 1.5.
