ice sheet. ice shelf, thick mass of floating ice that is attached to land, formed from and fed by tongues of glaciers extending outward from the land into sheltered waters. Where there are no strong currents, the ice becomes partly grounded on the sea bottom and attaches itself to rocks and islands.
Piedmont glaciers differ from valley glaciers primarily in their formation and flow patterns. While valley glaciers form within mountain valleys and are confined by valley walls, piedmont glaciers occur when these valley glaciers exit their confines and spread out onto flat land or plains.

Piedmont glaciers are not independent glaciers, but only parts of a larger glacier or glacier system.
