The problem with carion birds is that they are in "balanced" pet stat category, where as bats and owls are in "damage" meaning they have better threat generation. Well lets compare the top 3 pets along with an owl and look at what they can learn. Keep in mind what the following abilities do: Bite: a more efficient focus dump, meaning it does more points of damage per focus spent but it has a cooldown. It's nice to have but really only good if you're manually controlling your pet... which you should be.
Owl. The Owl family of Hunter pets are an offensive pet, meaning they deal high DPS but have lower armor or health. To keep your pet well-fed and happy, in order to maximize its damage, you must feed your Owl pet Meat. Offensive Abilities: Claw. Utility Abilities: Dive, Cower, Growl.
A bat or owl with Screech is useful for progression raids when tanks/healers aren't geared enough, and great in 5 man dungeons and leveling as well. Wolf is BIS for farming Dire Maul Tribute as the Howl ability makes ping ponging aggro much easier. This will probably all change in TBC.
