In order to obtain a pet cat, a player must complete the Gertrude's Cat quest, after which Gertrude will give them a kitten as part of the reward. After three hours, the kitten will grow into a pet cat. Cats no longer need the food nor attention required of a kitten, and will not run away.

1567. Overgrown cats are pet cats that the player has continued to grow after becoming an adult cat. After 5-6 hours of following the player, a regular adult cat will become an overgrown cat, and will lose its ability to catch vermin. Overgrown cats may be spoken to with a catspeak amulet, or without it after partial completion of Dragon Slayer II.
Players can store up to 60 pets in the menagerie of a player-owned house (with the highest-level pet house). Unlike other pets, cats are the only ones that must be raised to maturity by following the player. Kittens must be stroked and fed regularly, or they will run away.
