The BC Performance Standards (2009) focus on foundational skills of reading, writing, and math found primarily in the Language Arts and Math curricula. While these skills are fundamental to literacy and numeracy learning, the K-12 Learning Progressions build from these key skills.
While the BC Performance Standards (2009) aligned with the previous curriculum and supported teachers’ summative assessments of reading, writing, and math skills, they were not intended for a cross-curricular, conceptual approach to literacy and numeracy learning. Performance Standards give teachers a way to assess students’ abilities to apply their learning in realistic performance tasks in a variety of areas. Used with other methods, they can be an important part of a comprehensive assessment and evaluation system. The standards: should be used within the context of ongoing classroom instruction.
