As the public health reference laboratory for the state of Texas, we coordinate with state and local epidemiologists and the CDC in the surveillance of medically important parasitic diseases. The Parasitology Team also examines specimens collected by the Refugee Health Program.
It has an indirect life cycle, using Lymnaeidae snails as intermediate hosts. Definitive hosts become infected by ingesting metacercariae in food or water. Environmental factors (e.g., temperature, rainfall) are crucial for survival of snails and metacercaria, and for transmission.
