The liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, is a trematode parasite that infects domestic livestock, wildlife, and humans across every continent, except Antarctica. It has an indirect life cycle, using Lymnaeidae snails as intermediate hosts. Definitive hosts become infected by ingesting metacercariae in food or water.
