Cassio the soldier. In Act I Scene 1 we are offered a belittling portrait of Cassio by Iago. Iago presents Cassio as an inexperienced soldier, a mere ‘arithmetician’ (I.1.18) who has been promoted beyond his deserving. Perhaps this is a case of sour grapes.
