The short answer on what to do when talking to a BN is: Tell them exactly what you're there for. Be polite. Don't be upset if they say no. But if that isn't enough and you need more information, there's a few things you can do and remember to make the process easier for you, and hopefully get your map ranked faster. Checklist before you ask:
Ranked maps will have leaderboard and you can gain pp from it. Loved maps will also have leaderboard but you can't gain any pp from it. Qualified is just like Loved maps, but there are two chances: One will be Ranked after 7 days, and one will be go back to Pending.
There is a filter to find "any" map of a certain song, so you can find many Pending or Graveyard maps of a song you like. They are recommended because ranked maps are super varied, a 2* of one map can be harder than a 4* of another map and so on.
Loved is for maps that the community enjoys that, for one reason or another, cannot be ranked. For some, like Firelight and Sound Chimera, the mapper may not have wanted to go through the ranking process or a small part of the map doesn’t meet the ranking criteria (hit sounds or other minor issues).
