1 mar 2024 · One way to document the completion of Tennessee’s interstate system is to look at old highway maps. The 1963 map shows only a segment here and there of I-40 open. The 1974 map shows Interstate 40 as mostly completed, other than a 17-mile stretch between Knoxville and Jefferson County.
Portions of Historic Route 40 exist in Vallejo, along 5th Street, Alameda Street and Broadway. North of Vallejo the route goes up American Canyon [44] In Cordelia and Suisun City, the original route is along Cordelia Road. It is also signed as a historic route.

Originally, I-40 was constructed through downtown Winston-Salem, and it continued to follow that route until a new urban bypass route was built. After the bypass was completed around 1992, I-40 was relocated to the new freeway.
One of the largest missing segments of Interstate 40 is in Memphis, Tennessee. The original federal highway legislation passed in 1956 which mapped all the routes for the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways included the section of I-40 through Overton Park.
16 gru 2023 · Originally Interstate 40 was slated to run east from Midtown Memphis through Overton Park to Sam Cooper Boulevard. Opposition to that plan ultimately canceled it and the freeway mainline shifted to the northern beltway, eventually replacing Interstate 240 between Exit 1 and 12.
