Ernest Howard Shepard OBE MC (10 December 1879 – 24 March 1976) was an English artist and book illustrator. He is known especially for illustrations of the anthropomorphic animal and soft toy characters in The Wind in the Willows and Winnie-the-Pooh.

Winnie-the-Pooh (also known as Edward Bear, Pooh Bear or simply Pooh) is a fictional anthropomorphic teddy bear created by English author A. A. Milne and English illustrator E. H. Shepard. Winnie-the-Pooh first appeared by name in a children's story commissioned by London's Evening News for Christmas Eve 1925.
Shepard’s own son Graham had a teddy bear named Growler that he carried around with him, and it was this bear in particular that inspired Shepard’s memorable Pooh bear.
While the illustrations of Eeyore, Piglet, Kanga and Roo are very similar to the real toys, Shepard based his final drawings of Winnie-the-Pooh on a bear belonging to his own son, Graham. He described Growler as ‘a wonderful bear’ with ‘a comfortable air and the right waist measurement for Milne’s leading character.’.
