This data set is a point shapefile representing observations of inundation and water levels from the Alaska 1964 event obtained by Tom Horning (1997). The geospatial dataset were derived from a spreadsheet provided by Bruce Jaffe.
31 mar 2016 · Minutes after the 1964 magnitude-9.2 Great Alaska Earthquake (see “The Great Alaska Earthquake and Tsunami of March 27, 1964”), a series of tsunami waves swept through the village of Chenega in Prince William Sound, destroying all but two of the buildings and killing 23 of the 75 inhabitants.
10 kwi 2011 · The Cannon Beach History Center recorded Bill Steidel’s story of the tsunami of 1964 in a 1995 oral history, and over 15 of the center’s 140 oral histories mention the event in some way. The tsunami was triggered by a 9.2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alaska, and waves as high as 27 feet hit the Pacific Northwest coastline.
27 mar 2023 · About 4-1/2 hours after the earthquake struck Alaska, the tsunami wave reached the North Oregon Coast. Despite many close calls and damage to several coastal towns, there were no fatalities in British Columbia, Washington or Oregon, until the tsunami wave reached Beverly Beach State Park on the Central Oregon Coast.
