How to Become a Peace Officer in Ohio. This handout covers some of the basic information you'll want to know before enrolling in an academy. It includes a chart listing the minimum fitness requirements by age and gender needed to pass the Peace Officer Basic Training program.
OPOTA courses provided at the London main academy, the Tactical Training Center and regionally around the state are available for registration. New courses are added as developed so check back frequently for the latest in new offerings. You can also log on to OPOTA Portal to view the course catalog and conveniently register online.
Both classroom and practical application courses are conducted at OPOTA. During traditional classroom courses with no tactical or physical applications, students, when not in uniform, are expected to wear appropriate business casual clothing such as slacks, sport shirts or blouses, sweaters, and similar attire with appropriate footwear.
To be eligible for OPOTC certification as a peace officer, you will need to successfully complete certain skill-based student performance objectives (SPO’s), meet higher physical fitness assessment standards, and pass a written state certification exam (SCE) showing knowledge of cognitive-based SPO’s.
Applicants must pass a criminal background check, physical fitness test and drug screening to qualify for an academy. To become eligible to be certified, applicants must past the physical fitness requirements, skill assessments and a written examination.
