Part 1 begins with an introduction to amorphous materials. We explore glasses and polymers, learn about the factors that influence their structure, and learn how materials scientists measure and describe the structure of these materials.
Students, professors, and researchers in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering explore the relationships between structure and properties in all classes of materials including metals, ceramics, electronic materials, and biomaterials.
MITx offers open online courses (MOOCs) on the edX and MITx Online platforms. MITx courses from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering come directly from our classrooms and span the full breadth of our academic program. An assortment of popular DMSE classes are on offer.
This three-part course explores the structure of a wide variety of materials with current-day engineering applications. Taken together, the three modules provide similar content to MIT’s sophomore-level materials structure curriculum.
Module 1: Introduction to Specialization and Course. Module 2 • 5 hours to complete. In this module, we will see a high-level overview of materials science and engineering and learn about materials selection, materials families, types of bonding and processing of materials.
