In this video we look at how to set timing on an outboard motor using a timing light. We'll look at using timing marks, top dead center and the light to get good ignition timing at idle.
10 maj 2007 · You must stop engine and change setting then restart and check timing. You may need to do this several times to get correct timing. If you static time the engine by cranking but not starting, set timing to 28 deg so running timing will be 30 deg BTDC.
1 maj 2019 · If you set the engine to its true setting at cranking speed, when running it will advance beyond its limit by 4° which will set up pre-ignition causing guaranteed piston damage! You don't want that to take place.
22 lip 2020 · Rig a spark tester and have the gap set to 7/16". Hook up the timing light to the #1 plug wire. Crank the engine over and set the spark advance to 4 less than what the engine calls for.
5 paź 2018 · Timer Base: With the engine NOT RUNNING but in forward gear, have someone advance the throttle slowly from the idle position to full throttle while you observe the timer base. It should advance smoothly throughout that travel range. If it sticks, find out why and correct that restriction.
16 paź 2015 · Only Mercury, in its repair manuals, specifies setting the wide open throttle timing while cranking the motor using the starter. Much less dangerous and cumbersome.
6 wrz 2018 · Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns. Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond.
