There is no deadline to exchange old banknotes with the Bank of England. But it is usually easier and quicker to exchange notes at your own bank or at the Post Office. The Bank of England counter is open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 3pm (excluding Bank Holidays). Last entry at 2.45pm.

After this date, paper £20 and £50 banknotes will no longer be legal tender. So we are encouraging anyone who still has these to use them or deposit them at their bank or a Post Office during these last 100 days.

Don't panic if you have old notes. If you have old paper notes, the Bank of England says you should either use them or deposit them at your bank or at a Post Office before 30 September. From 1 October, only polymer notes will be accepted in shops, restaurants or anywhere else that takes cash.
