However, historical maps of Chicago are very useful in conjunction with other sources to determine where a street was and which name it had when. To unravel the mystery of Ann Street, I used A Guide to the Streets and Avenues of Chicago.
The 1923 Chicago Directory contains a publication history of the directories. "The Missing Directories" contains additional information. A representative number of directories have been digitized and are available here. The Newberry holds a large print collection of Chicago city directories as well as directories from other locals.
