The Ohio and Erie Canal was a canal constructed during the 1820s and early 1830s in Ohio. It connected Akron with the Cuyahoga River near its outlet on Lake Erie in Cleveland, and a few years later, with the Ohio River near Portsmouth. It also had connections to other canal systems in Pennsylvania.

22 lis 2021 · The Ohio & Erie Canal became the spine of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, established in 1974. In 1996, it also became the backbone of the new Ohio & Erie Canalway. This national heritage area continues to improve life here in Northeast Ohio. The canal no longer carries goods, news, or people.
The Ohio & Erie Canal enriched the prosperous economy of Chillicothe by providing access to markets for its mills and pork packers. A hint of the vitality of the canal trade may be seen today by the number of canal era buildings that front Water Street the original course of the canal.
