Drug Names. One of the biggest challenges when learning pharmacology is that all drugs have multiple names and ways to be identified. There are three basic methods for identifying a drug—the chemical name, the generic name, and the brand name, or trade name.
Generic (official) name. Brand (proprietary, trademark, or trade) name. The generic name is assigned, in the United States, by an official body—the United States Adopted Names (USAN) Council. The brand name is developed by the company requesting approval for the drug and identifies it as the exclusive property of that company.
