23 lut 2012 · Horace calls his poetry a monumentum, more everlasting than bronze and higher than the pyramids. The two objects with which the monumentum is compared are both memorials to the dead: bronze plaques adorned the tombs of the dead in Italy, while the pyramids are of course the tombs of the Egyptian kings.
The six odes which begin book 3, all in the Alcaic metre, and on serious subjects such as the Roman Empire, virtue, and Augustus, have long been recognised as forming an independent group within the collection. Since Plüss (1882) they have generally been known as the "Roman Odes".
Those who, like the present writer, have tended in lecturing on Horace to concentrate on Odes 1 and 2 because of the availability of Nisbet-Hubbard can now quite safely extend their repertoire into Odes 3.
