17 gru 2023 · These wild cats are ocelots—and they’re among the only two small populations remaining in the entire nation. Though these endangered cats once roamed everywhere from Louisiana to Argentina, less than 80 remain in the nation—and they’re all in South Texas.
Similar in size to a bobcat, the ocelot can grow as long as 3.5 feet and weigh up to 35 pounds. Its “op-art” pattern consists of chainlike streaks, spots, blotches and rosettes of dark markings. Widely distributed, the ocelot ranges from south Texas to northern Argentina.
This Manual, available for review or download below, provides the first version of procedures and protocols for breeding and wilding ocelots, releasing ocelots onto reintroduction sites within their historical range in southern Texas, and monitoring the released populations.
Description. The Ocelot is a beautiful medium-sized spotted cat with body dimen-sions similar to the bobcat (30-41 inches long and 15-30 lbs). Its body coloration is variable; with the upper parts gray or buff with dark brown or black spots, small rings, blotches, and short bars.
Protocols for providing veterinary care to the ocelots, behaviorally preparing them for life in the wild, releasing them at the reintroduction site, and monitoring them long-term have been developed as part of this “Manual” for breeding and reintroducing ocelots in Texas.
