About 1 in 48 adult U.S. residents (2.1%) was under some form of correctional supervision at the end of 2022. The rate of persons under community supervision in 2022 (1,400 per 100,000 adult U.S. residents) continued a decline from its peak in 2007 (2,240 per 100,000) (figure 1).
Nearly 5.6 million people were in prison, jail, or on probation or parole when counted in 2021, though an estimated 6.9 million were admitted to jail throughout the year. The share of state prisoners whose most serious offense, as defined by the FBI, was a drug crime has declined annually since 2007.
15 paź 2024 · Highlights. The U.S. prison population was 1,230,100 at yearend 2022, a 2% increase from yearend 2021 (1,205,100). The number of females in state or federal prison increased almost 5% from yearend 2021 (83,700) to yearend 2022 (87,800).

1 lut 2023 · The rate at which persons were in prison or jail increased for the first time since 2005, rising from 660 per 100,000 U.S. residents in 2020 to 680 per 100,000 in 2021, though it remained below the rate preceding the COVID-19 pandemic (810 per 100,000 in 2019).
More than 651,800 persons (62% of all state prisoners) were serving sentences in state prison for a violent offense at yearend 2020, the most recent year for which offense data were available. At yearend 2021, private facilities contracted to states or the BOP held 96,700 persons, a 3% decrease from yearend 2020.
