The incarceration numbers for the states in the chart below are for sentenced and unsentenced inmates in adult facilities in local jails and state prisons. Numbers for federal prisons are in the Federal line.
All but four US states (the exceptions are Rhode Island, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Minnesota) have a higher incarceration rate than Turkey, the nation with the second highest incarceration rate among OECD countries. See: List of U.S. states by incarceration and correctional supervision rate.
As of 2020, there were 345,500 black, non-Hispanic prisoners, compared to 327,300 white, non-hispanic inmates. The U.S. states with the largest number of prisoners in 2021 were Texas, California and Florida.
From 2021 to 2022, the number of white persons in the correctional population decreased by 99,000 (4%), while the number of Hispanic persons increased by 31,000 (4%), the number of black persons increased by 20,000 (1%), and the number of persons of all other racial groups increased by 8,000 (3%).
