In the 1960s, security applications required higher screen resolution than the standard 525-lines provided by standard television, and in 1969 the new RS-343 standard provided higher resolutions, up to 1,023 lines. Today, the resolution most widely associated with RS-343 is 875 lines, as with standard television.

The so-called NTSC-Film standard has a digital standard resolution of 720 × 480 pixel for DVD-Videos, 480 × 480 pixel for Super Video CDs (SVCD, Aspect Ratio: 4:3) and 352 × 240 pixel for Video CDs (VCD). [ 9 ] The digital video (DV) camcorder format that is equivalent to NTSC is 720 × 480 pixels. [ 10 ]
Relative chroma level is checked by measuring chrominance-to-luminance gain. Measured gain-ratio errors can be expressed in IRE, percent, or dB. When chrominance components are peaked relative to luminance, the error is a positive number. When chromi-nance is attenuated, the error is negative.
NTSC Variations There are three common variations of NTSC, as shown in Figures 8.6 and 8.7. The first, called “NTSC 4.43”, is commonly used for multistandard analog VCRs. The hori-zontal and vertical timing is the same as (M) NTSC; color encoding uses the PAL modula-tion format and a 4.43361875 MHz color sub-carrier frequency.
