14 mar 2024 · NTP uses the concept of a stratum to describe how many NTP hops away a machine is from an authoritative time source. For example, a stratum 1 time server has a radio or atomic clock directly attached to it. It then sends its time to a stratum 2 time server through NTP, and so on.
23 lis 2022 · The NTP subnet operates with a hierarchy of levels, where each level is assigned a number called the stratum. Stratum 1 (primary) servers at the lowest level are directly synchronized to national time services via satellite, radio or telephone modem.
27 cze 2022 · This section of the NTP FAQ explains how NTP constructs and maintains a working time synchronization network.
The NTP subnet model includes a number of widely accessible primary time servers synchronized by wire or radio to national standards. The purpose of the NTP protocol is to convey timekeeping information from these primary servers to secondary time servers and clients via both private networks and the public Internet.
NTP is designed for use by clients and servers with a wide range of capabilities and over a wide range of network delays and jitter characteristics. Most users of the Internet NTP synchronization subnet of today use a software package including the full suite of NTP options and algorithms,
The fully developed NTPv4 implementation is intended for secondary servers with multiple upstream servers and multiple downstream servers or clients. Other than these considerations, NTP and SNTP servers and clients are completely interoperable and can be intermixed in NTP subnets.
