Bereshit Rabbah is a talmudic-era midrash on the book of Genesis. It interprets most of Genesis (with the exception of genealogies and such) with verse-by-verse and often word-by-word commentary. Written in Hebrew, mixed with Aramaic and occasional Greek words, its style is simple and clear.
Midrash Rabbah is made up of ten independent midrashic collections, one on each of the Five Books of Moses and the five megillot. While some of the texts in this collection are from the same time and place and share some characteristics, there is much variation in their style and modes of interpretation.

This disproportion – five sevenths of the Midrash applying to one fifth of the book of Numbers – is in itself sufficient indication that there are here two different Midrashim: Numbers Rabbah I, consisting of sections 1–14, and Numbers Rabbah II, consisting of sections 15–23.
