On September 30, 2023, NJ TRANSIT and the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey partnered to operate a special excursion train entitled the “40th Anniversary Express” in honor of NJ TRANSIT Rail Operations’ 40th year of public service.
New Jersey Transit was created in 1979, primarily to operate the state’s bus lines. Its role in commuter rail operation slowly expanded, with timetables as early as 1980 bearing the NJT logo, even though those services were still being operated by Conrail.
