Nikon may make some small fixes free of charge and aren't always as expensive as you fear. Alternatively take it to a friendly camera shop as you've already realised. Edit: Did you try charging the battery?
You could always try to repair it yourself but it’s pretty easy to turn even a $250 lens into a $0 lens. I think there are a couple of repair videos for this particular lens since it had some known focusing and motor issues.

Some damage to camera - mode dial sticking, small crack in top plate - cost $176 plus shipping and tax. Well worth the cost.
