The National Imagery Interpretability Rating Scale (NIIRS) is used by imagery analysts to define the quality of aerial imagery from different imaging systems. The scale uses a number to indicate the level of detail which may be seen in an image, and therefore how much information may be expected from it. Military and Civil NIIRS scales are used to grade visible, radar, infra-red and multispectral imagery.
This document presents the Civil National Imagery Interpretability Rating Scale (NIIRS) and discusses its use. Image examples using the Civil NIIRS are displayed in Appendix I. Additional Civil NIIRS criteria are listed in Appendix II and a history of NIIRS appears in Appendix III.
These results indicate that the simplified GIQE can offer a useful tool for quick assessing image quality of various imaging systems.
