The NICE guideline Jaundice in newborn babies under 28 days recommends urgently measuring and recording the serum bilirubin level within 2 hours (and medically reviewing within 6 hours) for all babies with suspected or obvious jaundice in the first 24 hours of life .
Secondary care investigations and management will vary depending on the suspected cause, but options for treatment include observation, treatment of underlying illness, phototherapy, exchange transfusion, or surgical treatment.
