Objective: To provide national guidelines for the management of women with severe pre-eclampsia. Design: A consensus committee of 26 experts was formed. A formal conflict-of-interest (COI) policy was developed at the onset of the process and enforced throughout.

The cause(s) of pre-eclampsia and the optimal clinical management of the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy remain uncertain; therefore, we recommend that every hypertensive pregnant woman be offered an opportunity to participate in research, clinical trials and follow-up studies.
The recommendations on management of women at high risk of, or exhibiting clincical featues of pre-eclampsia are largely based on expert opinion in the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guideline Hypertension in pregnancy: diagnosis and management [NICE, 2019b].
