12 maj 2022 · LANSING, Mich. – Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed House Bill 4256, Senate Bill 258 and Senate Bill 259 into law. House Bill 4256 allows training of service animals in real-world settings, which will benefit people with disabilities who rely on service animals.

To qualify for a service dog in Michigan, an individual must have a physical or mental disability recognized under the ADA. The term “disability” means an impairment that substantially limits a life activity, like the ability to work, socialize, sleep, or learn.

Persons with disabilities are responsible for ensuring that their animal is sufficiently trained and under control. Animals that do not meet these requirements may be removed or reported for service animal fraud. In addition, poorly trained animals may be unreliable to their handler as a medical aide.
