The Neotropical realm is one of the eight biogeographic realms constituting Earth's land surface. Physically, it includes the tropical terrestrial ecoregions of the Americas and the entire South American temperate zone.
For example, the Neotropical realm is divided into Central America and Southern America. One Earth utilizes these 14 realm divisions – further divided into 52 habitable subrealms, 185 bioregions, and 844 ecoregions – as a framework to better understand the natural world that surrounds us.
26 maj 2014 · A more precise way to conduct this task is using Geospatial Information Systems (GIS). To improve the quality of future analyses, we aimed at providing a vector file of the biogeographical regionalisation by converting the published map into a polygon shapefile.
For decades the Geologic Atlas of California (discussed in the next section) has been the primary source of regional-scale geologic maps in California. In an effort to keep the maps current, the CGS has been compiling a new series of Regional Geologic Maps (RGM), starting in 1981.
We provide a map and shapefile of the 57 biogeographic provinces of the Neotropical region. Recognition of these provinces is based on their endemic species, but their delimitation on the map is based on ecoregions combining climatic, geological, and biotic criteria.
