Neon compounds are chemical compounds containing the element neon (Ne) with other molecules or elements from the periodic table. Compounds of the noble gas neon were believed not to exist, but there are now known to be molecular ions containing neon, as well as temporary excited neon-containing molecules called excimers.

Compounds: While neon is generally non-reactive, under extreme conditions, such as high pressure and the presence of a strong electric field, it can form a few compounds, such as neon clathrates.
5 Compounds. Neon is a very inert element, however, it has been reported to form a compound with fluorine. It is still questionable if true compounds of neon exist, but evidence is mounting in favor of their existence. The ions, Ne+, (NeAr)+, (NeH)+, and (HeNe+) are known from optical and mass spectrometric studies.
Naming Ions. The name of a monatomic cation is simply the name of the element followed by the word ion. Thus, Na + is the sodium ion, Al 3+ is the aluminum ion, Ca 2+ is the calcium ion, and so forth. We have seen that some elements lose different numbers of electrons, producing ions of different charges (Figure 3.3 "Predicting Ionic Charges").
