If you've just been using indoor antennas, you might need to try an outdoor antenna or maybe even your attic. I tried a couple indoor ones and none of them worked well at all. Switched to outdoor and replaced my old DirecTV dish and now every channel is perfect....

If you are getting rid of your dish then you can simply remove the dish connector and maybe even use its pole to mount your antenna on. This is an option for some people, however others actually do want to keep the dish and add an antenna.
Overall I'd say dish is the best alternative. But do what works best for you. There is also a welcome pack that is extremely cheap that isn't advertised. Had Dish now for a year. They didn't give me the option of a Hopper 3 and now want to charge an arbitrary fee for an upgrade.
