Most of the shoes on that tree are hung up there by people who buy new shoes at Neel's Gap and keep hiking on. I know because I watched two separate people throw their shoes into the tree on just the one hour that I was there during my thru and I heard about several other people who got new shoes in that same spot.

31 mar 2021 · Throwing Shoes. At the bottom of Blood Mountain is Neel Gap, where Mountain Crossings (an outfitter store) and the shoe tree are located. I took a nice long lunch break here, purchasing a little celebratory philly cheese steak and Kit Kat bar from the store.
These shoes hang from a tree in front of the Neel's Gap store on the Appalachian trail. The shoes in this tree are from hikers who either gave up hiking or who realized their shoes just weren't right for the rugged Appalachian Trail.
27 kwi 2023 · I got a new pair of shoes, the Asolo Softrock Hiking Shoes and a new pair of Superfeet inserts. I originally had Altras, but have high arches, and they just weren’t working out for my feet. I chucked them up into the tree with much delight. (Even though it took me at least four times to make it into the tree.)

Sharkchow made it past the famous “boot tree” at Neel Gap, where supposedly 20 percent of AT “starters” drop out (after a mere 31.7 miles on the trail). The tradition is, take off your boots, fling ‘em into the tree, and call it a day. But not Sharkchow.
