Near-Earth Objects, or NEOs, represent potentially catastrophic threats to our planet. A near-Earth object is an asteroid or comet which passes close to the Earth's orbit.
Those that do are called Near Earth Objects (or NEOs). Formally, an NEO is any comet or asteroid (also referred to, in particular, as Near Earth Asteroids, or NEAs) that passes within 1.3 astronomical units (au) of the Sun — this is slightly farther than the average radius of the Earth’s orbit.
Apophis is about 1,100 feet (340 meters) in width. It’s expected to safely pass close to Earth – within 19,794 miles (31,860 kilometers) from our planet’s surface – on April 13, 2029. This will be the closest approach to Earth by an asteroid of this size that scientists have known about in advance.
