The Bechuanaland Protectorate (/ ˌ b ɛ tʃ u ˈ ɑː n ə l æ n d /) was a protectorate established on 31 March 1885 in Southern Africa by the United Kingdom.
In 1885 Britain occupied southern Botswana, beginning a period of colonial rule that was extended to the northern part of the country in 1890. Thereafter, until the 1966 restoration of independence, the territory was known as the Bechuanaland.

It is bordered by South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west, Zambia to the north, and Zimbabwe to the northeast.
