Information systems technician (IT) is a rating for United States Navy and United States Coast Guard enlisted personnel, specializing in communications technology. Information systems technician submarines (ITS) is a rating for U.S. Navy submariners.
United States Navy ratings are general enlisted occupations used by the U.S. Navy since the 18th century, which denote the specific skills and abilities of the sailor. Each naval rating has its own specialty badge, which is worn on the left sleeve of dress uniforms of enlisted personnel.
Enlistees are taught the fundamentals of this rating through on-the-job training, civilian IT training academies, community colleges or formal Navy schooling. Advanced technical and operational training is available in this rating during later stages of career development.
On March 1, 2006, the Cryptologic Technician (Communications) CTO rating merged into the IT rating. The Navy's computerized personnel system associates the rating name with an alphanumeric Navy Navy Enlisted Manning Code (EMC). For IT, the EMC is B460; for ITS, C260.
