In this chapter, we will explore the nature of energy and how energy and chemistry are related to food and cooking. Sliding a match head along a rough surface initiates a combustion reaction that produces energy in the form of heat and light. (credit: modification of work by Laszlo Ilyes)
Plants convert carbon dioxide and water into food (sugar) and oxygen in the presence of light energy. Food (sugar) that is being produced provides the energy for the plants to carry out their life processes such as growth and reproduction. The food produced is also being transported through the food-carrying tubes to the other parts of the plant.
It is the basic source of heat and light for the entire living world and the source of energy for all ecosystems. Its thermal heat can be used for passively heating buildings and water. Its natural light (daylight) contributes immensely to the reduction of artificial light needed to light our buildings.
Carbohydrates, fats and proteins are the primary sources of energy in foods. Sugars, starches (such as those in bread, pasta and potatoes) and fiber (such as in many vegetables, whole fruits and whole grains) are the main forms of carbohydrates.
18 sty 2024 · Describe how organisms acquire energy in a food web and in associated food chains. Explain how the efficiency of energy transfers between trophic levels affects ecosystem structure and dynamics. Trophic interactions in a community can be represented by diagrams called food chains and food webs.
10 kwi 2024 · The chemical energy in food is converted into thermal energy through metabolism; light energy is converted into chemical energy through photosynthesis. Another example of energy conversion occurs in a solar cell.
There are different forms of energy in nature like mechanical energy, sound energy, light energy, electric energy, tidal energy, heat energy, etc. Heat energy is generated due to the transfer of heat from a warm system to a cool system. Heat energy is an essential form of energy in our day-to-day activities like cooking, heating, ironing, etc.
