Most plant-derived compounds possess great potential in therapeutic applications for chronic diseases, degenerative processes, carcinogenesis, and antiviral activity [1].

Penicillin, one of the antibiotics most commonly prescribed during pregnancy, is given to treat syphilis, and antibiotic cocktails are given for treatment of GBS and listeriosis to help prevent infection and sepsis in infants [78,84,154]. For UTIs, the choice of antibiotics given are dependent on the bacteria that has caused the infection.
Selection of antivirals requires careful consideration of maternal, and fetal, risks and benefits. In this article, the authors discuss these challenges and provide an overview of the pharmacologic treatment of common and emerging viral infections in pregnancy.
