Following a national flag design competition (in 1961), which failed to yield a winning model, a bipartisan committee of the Jamaica House of Representatives in early 1962, designed the Jamaican Flag in time for Independence Day Celebrations on August 6, 1962. The emblem has a diagonal cross or saltire with four triangles in juxtaposition.

The flag of Jamaica was adopted on 6 August 1962, the day Jamaica became independent from British Empire. The flag consists of a gold saltire , which divides the flag into four sections: two of them green (top and bottom) and two black (hoist and fly).

THE NATIONAL FLAG. Like the anthem, public suggestions were solicited through a competition. Starting from a basis of about 23 colours it was narrowed down to 3. It was decided by the Independence Celebrations Committee that the flag must have black; yellow was then added for brightness. Choosing the third colour was the challenge.
