NASA space-flown Gemini and Apollo medallions were mission-specific commemorative medallions, often astronaut-designed, which were approved by NASA and carried aboard the mission spacecraft into orbit.
Referred to by the title of the NASA office tasked with their issuing, the Manned Flight Awareness medals mark one of the rare instances when the agency used flown hardware to create mementos. Each medal was minted in part from metal flown aboard the mission for which it commemorates.
The NASA Distinguished Service Medal is the highest award that can be bestowed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States. The medal may be presented to any member of the federal government, including both military astronauts and civilian employees.
